Our Temporary Worker Division

Feb 6, 2023 | Employer Hub

One of the biggest challenges for businesses in 2023 is the ongoing candidate shortage. In fact, employers continue to turn to temporary staff to fill jobs in the face of economic uncertainty and labour shortages, according to new Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) data.

Despite the drop in confidence, the immediate outlook for hiring remains positive for both permanent and temporary workers. Anticipated demand for temporary agency workers continued to rise – improving by 1%, quarter-on-quarter, to +7 over the next three months, and 4% to +8 in the next four to 12 months. You can read the full report here.

It remains vital for us here at Noble Recruiting to continue to provide a high volume of skilled and experienced temporary people quickly.

The Candidate Relationship

As we have seen in the past few years, especially since the pandemic, technology has been the kingpin to allow us to continue placing temporary workers without meeting them in person. We have invested in ways to enable us to seamlessly get registration and induction documents from candidates, digitally, securely and quickly.

As much as speed is the essence here, a candidate relationship comes from sitting down, face-to-face, and getting to know their wants and needs from a temporary position.

We aim to register all our candidates face-to-face at our offices in Wickford. That way, we know immediately whether they will be a good fit for a business.

Our temporary workers work for us. They need specific work ethics for us to be confident they will be a positive ambassador for our brand.

Over 90% of all job searches start from a mobile device*

Simplifying our recruitment process for temporary workers has been key to our success in continuing to onboard temporary workers for our clients across a whole host of platforms, from social media, to our short registration form on our website, tackling head-on this candidate drought.

By adapting our offering, reactivating passive candidates using our new technology, we have continued to build a successful candidate pipeline for our clients.

Technology

We have invested in ways to allow us to seamlessly get registration and induction documents from candidates, digitally, securely and quickly.

Our new back office recruitment management system is completely automated allowing us to focus on placing the best candidates for new roles, rather than wasting time on admin. It will enable us to:

  • Update candidates from passive to active so we always have a new candidate list.
  • Even though we still meet our temporary workers face to face, bookings and follow-ups are all automated to save time.
  • Our electronic timesheets, payroll and holiday system are automated, allowing our temporary workers to easily upload their hours and any holiday requests, with minimal admin support and not on your time!

Introducing the Zoomers (Born 1997–2010)

Gen Z or Zoomers are now entering the workforce at pace. They expect a speedy recruitment process and often virtual. However, we know that meeting all our temporary workers face-to-face allows the team to get to know that candidate.

It enables us to go through our work ethics, things like leaving the mobile in the locker, turning up on time, every time, and so on.

We also give them some great freebies from water bottles, to hi-vis and work boots, which keeps our Zoomers happy!

What qualities do we look for in a Temporary Worker?

Our temporary workers are, on the whole, extremely reliable because we are open and honest about what we expect, we check in on them regularly, and we aim to always be available to help them manage their working environment.

Benefits of hiring Temporary employees

Temporary recruitment could be the perfect solution for companies right now, giving them the ability to increase headcount without committing to a long-term hire in these uncertain economic times.

Temporary employees are a great way to build existing teams, and evaluate skills and performance, without committing to a permanent placement.

As the REC has established, the demand for temporary employees is expected to rise by 7% over the next 3 months, indicating that companies still need new staff, and our own temporary team could be a solution.

Shorter assignments, a flexible workforce, and the ability to adapt hours worked and overtime pay will be even more desirable when the new National Minumum Wage increase comes about in April.

By embracing temporary labour now, companies have the ability to manage productivity against the rising cost of wages positively, minimising disruption to the existing permanent staff.

Neil Carberry, Chief Executive of the REC, says…

“Today’s data shows that businesses remain concerned by the economic outlook. That is no surprise, given high inflation and global economic and political uncertainty. But hiring intentions show that firms still need new staff and they also suggest that a recovery in confidence could be quite quick if inflation falls.”

Carberry continued, “In the face of high levels of uncertainty and labour shortages, it is no surprise that temporary workers are playing a bigger role in companies’ plans. Our world-leading temporary work market remains vital to many companies.”
