Why choose a career in marketing?

The Marketing Industry has changed radically in the last 10 years as social media and online channels have grown beyond anyone’s expectations.  Businesses now need to concentrate on both online and offline tactics to compete in their market.  As the saying goes, you’ve got to be in it to win it!

Marketing is a fast-paced and exciting industry. It is perfect for people who are efficient, decisive and strategic. You need to have excellent communication skills, which you can learn by taking marketing courses, and you need to be able to relate to almost everyone around you. The industry is not for everyone, but if you fit the profile read on for more reasons why you should choose a career in marketing.

Dynamic and Vibrant

If you are already in the industry then you will know that it is forever changing, which puts you at the forefront of new and exciting trends.  Online marketing is fast becoming the marketing frontier, and social media is affecting how marketers think about and create campaigns.  Marketing is now for all businesses not just for the big Corporate Brands fighting for their share of the market like Coca Cola or Tesco.

Great Local Opportunities

Marketing departments used to be just for the big brands in big cities and there were very little opportunities to earn a good salary in marketing locally.  Luckily, we are now seeing many more dynamic roles becoming available in Essex both Agency-Side and Client-Side.

Communication

Being a marketer means that you will be dealing with new people on a regular basis, making this the perfect career for a people-person.  Depending on your role, you will be expected to present either to Client or to Agency or even Board level your strategic ideas and campaign routes so be sure that you are comfortable presenting at senior level.

Creative

If there is one industry where your creativity is embraced the most it has to be marketing.  You will be able to use creative thinking to come up with innovative solutions and campaigns for your brand or clients.  With technological advancements it is imperative you are a lateral thinker.  You need to be able to ‘think outside the box’ to generate stand out for your brand across all routes to market. Career Progression

As your marketing career develops, you will find there are so many opportunities to go all different routes.  You could specialise in a certain sector or style so B2B or B2C retail or financial services.  Many marketers are now focusing on a certain route to market e.g. online pay per click or search engine optimisation is good for those marketers who have an analytical brain.  Broader roles which span the whole marketing portfolio are often client-side and allow you to move from executive to manager to senior position quite quickly if you are a strategic thinker and have an innate ability to plan and deliver projects in a timely manner within budget.

Marketing is vital to all businesses and industries

Marketing is used by both commercial and public businesses and the quality of their marketing can often determine the success or failure of their products and services.  This means as a marketer you will be a key player in the success of the business you work for whether it is agency or client-side.  All marketing campaigns are usually associated with sales targets and your campaign should be deliverable.  The success of your career will depend on the success of you marketing strategies so often this industry is extremely fast-paced (you will be expected to analyse strategies and successes and adapt accordingly often on a daily basis) and be able to work under pressure on a regular basis.
